Importance Of Bearings In Machines

Bearings are important contacts that are found in the various kinds of machines used for different kinds of work. The importance of bearings has been recognized from years unknown that help in the smooth motion of the machines. They provide rolling or sliding contacts when the parts of any machine are in a relative motion.

General Types Of Bearings

There are namely 2 types of bearings referred to as:

  • Sliding contacts
  • Rolling contacts

Types Of Bearings Based On Purpose

Both the types of contacts are further divided into different types and all of them offer great advantages in the working systems of the machines for which reasons there is great importance of bearings that are used in different circumstances. Here are some of the common types that use different types of bearings to work efficiently:

  • Ball Bearing

Ball bearings use balls to cause the rotating movements. They are cheaper as compared to other bearings and offer great accuracy. They work well with less friction in moving loads that are light while supporting the axel and radial.

  • Roller Bearing

The importance of bearings that provides a rolling contact use cylinders and are mostly of larger diameters. These can support higher capacity of radial loads and are mostly used in machinery and rotary appliances.

  • Taper Roller Bearing

The importance of bearings that use the taper roller bearing lies in the fact that they can support loads of large radial and thrust. It has a series of conical or tapered rollers and has great advantages when used in car hubs.

  • Thrust Ball Bearing

This type of bearing has two washers made of steel with balls situated inside them. They are commonly used in turn tables and swivel bar-stools that require a comparatively low speed.

  • Needle Bearing

The importance of bearings that use cylinders which are longer and thinner like needles lies in its ability to reduce the friction when it rotates. This type of bearings provide great advantages in engines and transmissions as is seen in the drive shaft of the car that has a rear wheel drive. It uses about 8 needle bearings.

  • Antifriction Bearings

The rolling contact bearings are also referred to as antifriction bearings. The importance of bearings that use antifriction bearings is to help reduce the friction to a large extent. Their main work is to remove all sorts of sliding in between the surfaces of the bearing and replace it with rolling interfaces. These bearings use hydrostatic or hydrodynamic fluid film that helps to carry the loads without much friction.

  • Circumferential Groove Bearing

There is yet another type of bearing known as the circumferential groove bearing. This type uses an oil groove that is extended around the bearing maintaining the oil by pressure. They prove to be very effective when used in reciprocating main load and maintaining a connection in the rod bearings with the uniform distribution of oil.

  • Babbitt Bearings

These special types of bearings are equally efficient and are used in various large surfaces where the smaller bearings would not be cost effective. Babbitt bearings were made of an alloy of antimony, lead and tin. These bearings were also known as white metal or soft metal. This is an excellent type of material used in babbitt bearings. They are highly recommended in power generators that are large and are used in the main shafts of huge ships also.
